NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses

The NRA Basic Courses are more appropriate for individuals who want to learn more in depth and gain more hands-on training than a FIRST Steps program.

NRA Basic Courses teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude needed for owning and using a firearm safely. Students will learn about the firearms parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety and handling, selecting a firearm and much more.

Unlike the FIRST Steps program which focuses on one specific action type of firearm (i.e., Revolvers), the NRA Basic Courses teach a type of firearm (i.e., Pistols - single and double revolver actions and semi-automatic actions). This results in a much broader knowledge of the firearm type.

Each discipline is a minimum 10-hour course (split over 2 days) including range time. Textbook and course materials are provided.

Using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement, basic courses provide hands on learning opportunities in the following areas:

  • safe firearm handling
  • firearm parts and operation
  • ammunition and its function
  • shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
  • how to select, clean and store a firearm
  • review of various activities available to help participants develop and improve their shooting skills
NRA Basic Courses are offered by Heritage Shooting in the following disciplines:
  • Home Firearm Safety
  • Pistol
  • Rifle
  • Shotgun
  • Personal Protection Inside the Home
  • Personal Protection Outside the Home

The Personal Protection Course - The course goal is to develop the basic knowledge, attitude and skills necessary for the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense.

Pre-qualifications must be met for participation in the Personal Protection course.

Course covers defensive shooting; basic defensive handgun skills; firearms and the law -- possession, ownership, and the use of deadly force; strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation; selecting a handgun for self-defense and more.

Attractive certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each basic course.
